BioBricks are made by compressing hardwood sawdust and wood waste into brick size blocks measuring
approximately 2”x4”x6”. They were first introduced to the New England area by BioPellet LLC (www.biopellet.net), a Berlin, Connecticut company. The Company was interested in providing a low cost, locally produced environmentally friendlier alternative to other energy products. Their creation relies on a local renewable energy source, and the use of BioBricks for heating purposes reduces emissions associated with pollution and related climate changes as compared to other energy products.
BioBricks are intended for use in a wood stove or fireplace, so they are an alternative to both fossil fuels and cord wood. They differ also from the very small wood pellets which require an electrically powered augur to feed specially designed pellets stoves.
The BioBricks may be purchased in individual 38 lb shrink-wrapped plastic packages with 20 bricks in each package. They may also be purchased by 1,900 lb pallet consisting of 50 of the 38 lb packages and measuring 4 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet.
BioBrick Advantages:
- They help to reduce the dependency on foreign fuels.
- They produce less harmful emissions than fossil fuels.
- They produce half the smoke and chimney emissions of cordwood.
- They typically produce very little ash, generally less than 1 percent.
- They have twice the density and less than half the moisture content of cordwood, and therefore burn hotter and with over twice the burn time of cordwood.
- They are cleaner and easier to store and handle than cordwood and require less storage space.
- They provide a more consistent, predictable and even heat than cordwood.
- BioBricks are a single size and fit with ease into a wood stove or fireplace.
