Brown's Oil & Air Conditioning — Wood Pellet Stoves

Wood Pellet Fireplace Inserts and Stand Alone Stoves

Wood pellets may be burned in fireplace inserts, free standing stoves, and in pellet furnaces which are intended to distribute forced hot through ductwork and would normally be installed in a basement. Pellet stove operation has been automated, so that to a large degree the operation of the stove does not require manual intervention. Pellets are injected into the burn pot in the burner or combustion chamber by means of an auger or similar device powered by an electric motor. The pellets in the burn pot are mixed with forced hot air from a motor powered fan. The air and fuel mix ratio is adjustable either manually or through a control circuit board which controls the pellet feed rate and blower fan speed. A wall thermostat can be used to make this process automatic or it can be set manually. Heat exchangers are also contained in the combustion chamber and an electric motor is used to force hot air through the heat exchangers into the room in which the stove is located. Generally, pellet stoves now come equipped with automatic ignition systems controllable with thermostats or remote control devices.

A venting system to remove combustion by-products, which may be either a chimney (preferably with a stainless steel liner) or through a separate metal smoke pipe, using double lined piping, consisting of stainless steel interior piping carrying the exhaust products and galvanized steel exterior piping. Generally most pellet stoves come equipped with a fan which blows the exhaust gases though the venting system to the exterior of the house.

Operation of pellet stoves requires filling the hopper with pellets, emptying the ash pan, periodic cleaning of those stove components which accumulate ash, and annual professional servicing.
